Mukono General Hospital:

A New Beginning for Improved Health Care Delivery

After much debate and delay, Mukono General Hospital has finally been handed over to the district leadership, marking a new chapter in the management of this critical health facility. The hospital’s elevation from a health center IV to a general hospital in 2019 created a disagreement between the municipality and district administration, with each party seeking to retain control over the hospital.The prolonged tussle negatively impacted the hospital’s operations, leading to several protests by medical workers over delayed payments and lack of protective gear. However, the new town clerk of Mukono municipality, Godfrey Kisekka, has been working on the transition of all managerial powers to the district, which has been well received by the Chief Administrative Officer, James Nkata.Under the Health Ministry policy, General Hospitals serve as referral facilities for the population beyond the lower local government where they are located. Mukono General Hospital, being situated within the municipality, will continue to be monitored by municipal authorities, even as the district takes over management. This joint effort between the two administrative units will ensure improved health care delivery to the people of Mukono.
