Rongo University: Nurturing Innovative Graduates in Kenya

Rongo University (RU), previously known as Rongo University College, has a rich history dating back to the early 1970s. Founded as Kitere Technical School, the institution was established by local community members as a craft apprenticeship training center. In response to the growing demand for technical and vocational training in the Southern Nyanza region, leaders from the Union of South Nyanza Welfare Association petitioned President Daniel Arap Moi to elevate Kitere Technical to a public institution in the early 1980s. President Moi agreed and Moi Institute of Technology (MIT) was established in 1983, offering diploma and undergraduate programs in education, business, and human resource management. In 2007, Moi University signed a memorandum of understanding with MIT to offer these programs as a satellite campus, with the first batch of 100 students supported by the Rongo Constituency Development Fund admitted in January 2008. Four years later, the Government elevated MIT to Rongo University College, which operated as a constituent college of Moi University until H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the Charter elevating it to a full-fledged public university in 2016. Today, Rongo University is located 11 kilometers from Rongo Town and 2.5 kilometers off the Rongo-Migori Highway, with a student body of over 6,345 students on both government and self-sponsorship programs, and a staff complement of 458. The university is committed to providing high-quality education through teaching, research, and community service, and nurturing innovative graduates. As an institution that is market-driven, Rongo University offers a variety of academic programs that are geared towards improving the socio-economic status and well-being of the Kenyan people. The university is committed to undertaking research and extension activities that contribute to local and national development. The staff and students of Rongo University are highly delighted to be associated with this great institution, and they sincerely thank the current and former leaders of the Southern Nyanza District, the Kitere community, the university council, and the Government of Kenya for their great foresight and continued support and commitment to the institution. In summary, Rongo University is an innovative institution that is committed to providing quality education, undertaking research and extension activities, and contributing to the socio-economic development of Kenya. The university is a symbol of hope for the people of Southern Nyanza, and it continues to nurture graduates who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
